Białowieski National Park

The Park area (enlarged in 1996 by over 5 thousand ha) covers 10,502 ha. In 1977 the Park was recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and in 1979 designated as a World Heritage Site as the only natural site in Poland.
The Park flora contains about 4,500 different species. The oldest oaks are over 400 years old. Some of them have become legendary, such as the Jagiello Oak, which was blown down in a strong wind when it was about 500 years old. The Park fauna is abundant and contains about 12,000 species. The European bison is the Park symbol. At present, in the Polish part of the Bialowieza Primeval Forest a herd of over 250 specimens is living in the wild.
Tourism is allowed in the Park only in organized groups, led by licensed guides. In the "Strict Reserve" only one, 4 km walking trail is available to visitors. The main attraction for visitors is the natural history museum and the exhibition enclosure of European bison.
