Czestochowa attracts some of the largest pilgrimages in Europe (sources put it third, after Lourdes in France and Fatima in Portugal). The monastery was build with funds provided by Duke Wladyslaw. He founded the Byzantine - style painting of the Virgin Mary, commonly referred to as the Black Madonna. Since then, numerous miracles have been attributed to the image, which has given rise to Czestochowa's shrine status.
